The alternative to Word and Canva when it’s going to print

Word is made for text, Canva for social media and quick graphics – and both are genuinely good at it. But when a draft is meant to become a business card, a flyer or a poster from a print shop, what matters is the part you can’t see on screen. That’s what LaydoStudio is built for.

What a print shop expects from your file

Most online print shops check every file automatically before it goes into production. These are the points that come up most often:

Word: great for text, not for print files

Word saves a PDF at exactly the page size you set, and for a letter that’s perfectly fine. For printed matter, though, the key settings are missing:

Does that mean a Word PDF always gets rejected? No. If nothing reaches the edge, many print shops accept it and convert the colors themselves. But if you want to know in advance what ends up on paper, you need a file that answers these questions itself.

Canva: great on screen, a plan question for print

Canva has its own “PDF Print” download with 300 dpi, bleed and crop marks – that already gets you a long way. The difference is the color profile: according to Canva’s help center, CMYK is only available on paid plans (Canva Pro, Teams, Education and Nonprofits).

On top of that, Canva works with an account and stores your designs in the cloud. For many people that’s exactly what makes it convenient. If your flyer contains prices, customer data or internal details, you might prefer to keep it on your own device.

And to be fair: with its huge template library, Canva is unbeatable when you’re looking for an idea fast. LaydoStudio doesn’t have one – here you start with the right format and design it yourself.

Print features – all free in LaydoStudio

LaydoStudio has a Pro plan too. But it’s there for convenience – unlimited pages, automatic saving, the Brand-Kit, mail merge, IDML export – not for getting a correct PDF. Everything a print shop checks is included for free, no account needed:

Flyer in the editor with the Inspector open: four issues, including a line that is too thin with a fix button
The Inspector shows what would cause trouble in print as you go – a line that’s too thin is fixed with one click.

More than a clean export

On top of that come tools that make the difference for printed matter:

With Pro: your look in one place

If you need print pieces regularly, you end up retyping the same address, colours and logo again and again. The Brand-Kit keeps them together in one place:

Business card in the LaydoStudio editor, filled from the Brand-Kit: logo and contact block, the Brand-Kit blocks sprung open on the right
A business card filled from the Brand-Kit: logo and contact block come from your details. On the right, the blocks spring open – ✓ means already in the document.

Same name, different idea: Canva’s Brand Kit is a collection of logos, colours and fonts you pick from while designing, or apply to a design with a click. LaydoStudio’s Brand-Kit also knows your company details and your team, inserts ready-made blocks, places the logo by rules for each kind of print piece – and stays linked to your documents.

With Pro, LaydoStudio saves your documents automatically – to a folder of your choice or in your browser’s local storage, never on our servers.

What if I keep using Word or Canva?

You don’t have to give them up. Copy your text across, add photos as images. Logos and graphics in PDF or AI format stay real vector artwork in LaydoStudio, crisp at any size. That way the draft happens wherever it’s easiest for you, and the print file where it’s right.

Frequently asked questions

Q01Will a print shop accept a PDF from Word?+

Often, yes, as long as nothing reaches the edge. The print shop then converts the RGB colors to CMYK itself, and full-bleed areas lack bleed. For a predictable result, a file with CMYK, bleed and a defined trim size is the safe choice.

Q02Do I need bleed if nothing reaches the edge?+

No, then the trim size alone is enough. But as soon as a color area, a photo or a line is meant to reach the edge, it needs about 3 mm (⅛ in) of bleed on every side. LaydoStudio adds it automatically and points it out on export if you’ve turned it off.

Q03Is CMYK export in LaydoStudio really free?+

The editor and the print-ready PDF export with CMYK, color profile and PDF/X-4 are free to use, no account needed. The Pro plan (€6/month) adds unlimited pages, automatic saving of your documents, the Brand-Kit and mail merge, among other things.

Q04Can I keep editing a Canva design in LaydoStudio?+

Not as an editable file – Canva projects can’t be opened directly. You can bring over individual elements, though: logos and graphics as PDF or AI stay real vector artwork, photos come in as images, and you set the text again in LaydoStudio.

Q05What does PDF/X-4 mean?+

PDF/X-4 is an ISO standard for print files. Among other things it requires embedded fonts, a defined trim size and a color profile describing the printing condition the file is intended for. LaydoStudio marks its exports as PDF/X-4, with PSO Coated v3 (FOGRA51) by default or GRACoL2013 for inch/US users.
